Practical skills (Module 18)

Aim

To enable adults to gain and develop practical skills for the benefit of the young people in their section.

Objectives

  • Describe effective methods of learning for adults and young people.
  • Select appropriate training techniques to meet different training needs.
  • Demonstrate how a young person is effectively trained and developed in a practical skill.

The day

We'll be spending the day outdoors at our Area campsite - in case of poor weather some basic shelter will be available.

Kicking off at 11am, we'll go through the theory of teaching practical skills with a bit of a demonstration with audience participation!

Throughout the day, our Training Team, Land Activities support unit, and other experienced supporters will be running skills bases for you to take part in.

Then during the afternoon it's over to you!  Everyone needs to bring a skill to teach to another person:

  • It can be something really simple like sewing on a button, sharpening a knife, or something from a hobby like electronics (soldering) - if nothing comes to mind straight away, have a look through the activity badges for your section for inspiration!
  • Remember we'll be outdoors all day with shelter available, so it must be possible for your skill to be taught in this environment.
  • You'll need to bring the equipment, materials and other resources necessary.
  • You must think about any COVID-Secure precautions that will need to be taken to prevent transmission, thinking about contamination of equipment, and comply with current social distancing requirements at the time of the event.
  • You must make at least some bullet-point notes about any other safety precautions needed and bring these with you.
